Mountain Running and Fastpacking

Like in the open water, I’m at home in the mountains. But being of blocky build and much heavier than most mountain runners, I’m not terribly fast when bounding up over the mountain trails. Most of my mountain running and fastpacking is not done with speed pressure and I often prefer to do it solo because most other ultra runners are faster than me.

I’ve come to prefer fastpacking overnight and multi-day mountain runs as opposed to ultra marathons and trail running races.

I’ve run many of the mountain tracks in New Zealand, the Larapinta trail in Outback Australia and the Overland Track in Tasmania. New Zealand provides an amazing environment for this type of adventure with endless trails, beautiful mountains, huts along the way and plenty of rivers for refilling water supplies.
